About me

ABOUT ME
Hi, I am Fabienne Meier, an Environmental Scientist (MSc ETH Zürich) passionately photographing the great outdoors. During my studies, I focused on natural hazards, water, landscape and forest management, biodiversity, climate, and glacier science.

I am particularly fascinated by cold, rough, and remote polar regions in Alaska, Greenland, the Arctic and Antarctic. Already as a kid, it was a dream of mine, being part of scientific expeditions in polar environments. In summer 2022, my dream came true, and I took part in a two-month glacier and climate science training in Juneau, Alaska.
Skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering, bivouacking and photography have always been my favorite hobbies. 10 years ago, I bought my first Canon SLR camera and since then I am not climbing any mountain without a camera in my hand.
By using creative means and combining photography, as my favourite kind of media, with my background in science, my goal is to teach and hopefully inspire the public about scientific issues around the polar regions that otherwise may be hard to access or understand. With my work I would like to highlight the importance of science communication through art, to get more people involved in the polar sciences, and to gain a better appreciation for our planet.

What I love most about outdoor photography is being outside with great, inspiring people, challenging myself physically, discovering the world with a new perspective and expressing my creativity while capturing emotions of people and the beauty of nature.

Being outside with the camera awakens my curiosity. Through the lens, I perceive the surroundings and small details much more intensely.

The truth is: the natural world is changing. And we are totally dependent on that world. It provides our food, water and air. It is the most precious thing we have and we need to defend it. If people lose knowledge, sympathy and understanding of the natural world, they’re going to mistreat it and will not ask their politicians to care for it. Bringing nature into the classroom can kindle a fascination and passion for the diversity of life on earth and can motivate a sense of responsibility to safeguard it. No one will protect what they don’t care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced.
